In fourth grade, we will be using the Write Steps writing program to help us meet the requirements of the Common Core State Standards. Our writing block will include planning and brainstorming, peer conferencing, revision, teacher editing, and direct instruction in the mechanics of grammar. This teaching technique allows students the opportunity to develop expression, revision strategy, and skill in writing.
The program is divided into seven units of study:
- Unit 1: Getting Ready for Core Writing
- Unit 2: Real Narrative Writing
- Unit 3a: 5 Square Paragraph Writing
- Unit 3b: Informative/Explanatory Writing
- Unit 4: Opinion Writing
- Unit 5: Imagined Narrative Writing-Legend
- Unit 6: Research Writing
Writing goals will surround challenging students to expand their ideas, choose a topic, become more aware of correct spelling and punctuation, adding details, word choice, new beginnings, and good endings through mini lessons.
